Analysis: Warming From Sun Is MASSIVELY Greater Than CO2

Hat tip to Neil Stevens for this calculation he sent me:

Mass of the Sun: 2000000000000000000000000000000 kilograms*
Mass of CO2 atom: 0.00000000000000000000000002 kilograms

This makes the Sun 100000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000
Times more massive than a co2 atom.

Or to put it another way, a co2 atom is just:
0.0000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000001%
compared to the Sun.

The Sun is over 100000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000!

Now you see how ridiculous the claims of warmists are. They tell us co2 will kill us all by heating us when it is so insignificant compared with the sun.

For further reading on the dominiation of the sun take a look at this recent point article:
http://wattsupwiththat.com/2009/04/15/the-oceans-as-a-calorimeter/

*Note the figures were given to me in kilograms. A kilogram is 2.2 pounds.

The Side Bar: A quick lesson on Exponentials

The side bar is a feature I will use regularly to teach my readers "dos" and "donts" of science that I have picked up over the years. Today I will talk about a relevant "don't" that is potentially muddying the mind of the warmists.

We could have also described the above numbers using a concept called exponentials. An exponential looks like this:

2 × 1030 kilograms

The 30 following the 10 is called the exponential. It indicates how many zeros follow the number. In this case it says there should be 30 zeros after 20 (2 x 10).

When the exponential is negative this means number of zeros after the decimal point before the first number. Eg:

2 × 10-26 kilograms = 0.000000000000000000000000002

Exponentials are often used as shorthand by people who don't want to bother writing all the zeros out. That's fine if you are just keeping score in a very long game of football! But if you are an engineer designing a saftey system, or a scientist conducting an experiment, you should really take the care to accurately write out whole numbers.

Writing out the zeros gives you a better appreciation of the size of numbers and you might spot potential errors. Perhaps an overuse of exponentials is why a minority of climate "scientists" don't comprehend how ludicrious co2 warming really is. If they just compare 5 digits with 5 digits for Sun vs CO2 they might not contemplate how massive the sun is compared to an atom of co2.

Any guesses for how numbers are represented in climate computer models? No prizes for that answer...

  2. I don't think that CO2 has that much of an effect either, but I don't suppose even the 'warmists' would claim that an atom of CO2 (shouldn't that be molecule?) would do very much on its own. I appreciate your effort to describe very large (and small) numbers, but I think you're overstating the case for effect.

  3. Ahh but look at the sky. The sun is about 0.5 degrees (angle not temperature) across. The sky is 180 degrees across. The sky is 360 times as wide as the sun. But as its area you have to square that. If you look up, the sky is 130,000 times as big as the sun.

And what is the sky made of? Nitrogen. About 80% nitrogen. So nitrogen is 80% of 130,000 times as big as the sun. Or 100,000 times as big as the sun.

And co2 is a bigger molecule than nitrogen, because it has 3 atoms and nitrogen only 2.

So is the sun really bigger than Co2, or is this some fake result based on your so-called denial science.

  7. Thank you for shedding light on these very troubling numbers. . . I want to know whether there has been a cooling trend this week. Perhaps you could write a post on that? I'm sure a lot of people would like to know that it is really cooling as we are all fed up with the warmist conspirers who claims it is really warmer when it is colder but never the other way.

    Can you help? 1000000 thanks.

  8. Actually according to Uah temps were up 0.3 degrees last week. At this rate of warming the hole surface of the planet should be turned into lava by the end of the century.

  9. "Thank you for shedding light on these very troubling numbers"

No problem, it is the least I can do considering our very lives are under threat from the alarmists.

"I want to know whether there has been a cooling trend this week. Perhaps you could write a post on that?"

We are in a deep maunder minimum at the moment so the chances are we HAVE had a cooling trend this week. I expect we will have cooling trends every week for a long time to come. I will do a blog post on the subject of global cooling soon.

This assumes UAH temps are accurate to a few tenths of a degree...

Have you considered that nearby asteroids, other satellites and the cooling sun might be biasing the UAH record?

Well actually this week it has been 2 degrees warmer here than last week. Perhaps Uah is underestimating the warming trend and the surface of the earth will melt by 2024.

  15. Bogus argument Inferno! While it may be true that the sun is massively more massive than CO2 molecules, the CO2 molecules are being pulled inward by gravity, causing compression, and hence, heating. Conversely, the earth is not being pulled in towards the sun, therefore no compression and heating from the sum. Also, you have to remember that the sun is hidden for half of each day, whereas CO2 is never hidden. People have a hard time with that one because CO2 is invisible, but that doesn't mean it's hidden. Also, clouds will often hide the sun. Also eclipses. Your model is incomplete.

  16. It should also be pointed out that UAH is based in Alabama, which is a very hot state.

  17. This post and all the comments are intended in jest, right?

    ReplyDelete
  18. Can someone do a calculation comparing the size of the sun to all the CO2 floating around the atmosphere? The comparison should be based on the approximate 0.0035%, or so, that is hanging around our atmosphere. That would be a more potent argument. Thanks, keep up the good work, real science will eventually win the day as it did for Galileo, Newton, etc...

  19. "This post and all the comments are intended in jest, right?"

Oh, sure, just because we dont swallow everything that Gore spoon feeds us that means we must be joking. You know what's a joke? The fact that the MSM isn't reporting the cooling that's been going on or the fact that the hockey stick was an invented fraud done with bad statistics. If you use proper statistics, all the warming is gone and all the money for climate scientists dries up.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Yes, why does the media not report about Gore's and Hansen's falsified ice hockey stick fraud, which was disproved by the ice cores where temperature comes before carbon dioxide? That's why the Vikings could colonize Antarctica during the medieval warming period - it was all green then but then came the little ice age.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Just one correction Lars - the Vikings colonized Greenland, not Antarctica

    ReplyDelete
  22. Good call Lars, I'm glad somebody finally brought up the hockey stick fraud. That never gets any attention.
